Weekend Update 8/22/26

Current river temperature is 72°.

Current river level 4.6 at latham.

While we have been receiving measurable amounts of rain, it has not been enough to raise water levels, but enough to stop them from dropping to ultra drought level.

It is nice to see the grass turn green again. And I’m sure the farmers and gardeners are also loving this.

Work is continuing at stone’s landing. And there is progress on the pilings for the permanent pier.

Hats off to Machesney Park for developing

The floodplain property into a great space for the community to enjoy.

I’ve had a very educational time talking with steve and karen from hoo haven this week.

We are so blessed to have their organization and their hard work. That benefits many of the counties of northern illinois.

They informed me that pickle is progressing nicely in his rehab.

I asked karen if pickle was a boy or a girl.

I guess it’s not as easy as just lifting up the tail feathers like we all would think.

The only true way is to do a blood test. I was informed.

X rays still look good.

Karen says pickle is not extremely happy about being inside at the moment.

When an animal is upset, they tend to not eat as they should.

Karen informed me from the other Pelican, that they have. She has developed a special way to feed them.

With the help of an assistant, she is able to take the fish and put it down pickles throat and get it into his belly.

That is just so amazing that she has the talent to take care of animals this way.

They are using a special burn cream on pickles Wing, along with antibiotics and some pain meds to try and get the wound to heal quicker.

They’re anticipating about a 30 day Timeline to get things headed in the right direction for pickle to fly again.

They have an outside protected area that will be used when he is Getting closer to flying.

Most pelicans have migrated south by the end of october in our region.

If his rehab goes a little longer, they do have an option of transporting him by vehicle down south for him not to have to fly so far.

Karen informed me they have done this before with the aid of their volunteers and reimbursing them for their travel expense.

We will put up a link for people to contribute online to hoohaven.

If you are old school like me and want to mail a check. It is hoo haven. 10823 cleveland road durand illinois, 61024.

Any amount will help them continue their efforts in  saving our precious wildlife in our region.

Also, at the present time, they are looking for donations of paper towels, kleenex, and all sizes of trash bags.

I know there are thousands of people monitoring pickle’s progress. And I hope many of you will step up to the plate and make a much needed Donation to their organization.

According to the calendar, we still have 30 days of summer left.

Tad’s, prairie street and embassy suites are a great place to take the family out for good fun and food by boat.

Let’s continue to support our local river Establishments, while we still have the boating season open.

Weather looks to be great this weekend if the rain holds out today.

I lite  jacket is all that’s needed to make an evening boat ride pleasurable.

Please be safe and practice defensive driving when out on the river. And let’s all make it back to the dock, safe and sound.
