Weekend Update 8/28/26

Current river temperature is 74°.
Current river level is 4.25. At Latham.
During extreme drought, I have seen it go as low as 3.8
The flow rate at Rockton is 1.5 million gallons of water per minute.
As a reference in April, when we had the high water event, we were at 9 million gallons of water per minute.
Boats are still having no problem coming out of sports core.  Just stay away from the peninsula slide that we have marked with shallow signs.
I remember as a kid having a drink called the green river. At the high crest bowling alley.
The conditions have been ideal this summer for growing algae on lake koshkonong
With the extremely warm temperatures we had plus the lack of water turnover, it was inevitable.
This has happened many times over the decades.
I was told Lake Summerset is also experiencing a heavy algae Bloom the past month.
On the river, the problem is a little more noticeable from sportscore down to the dam.
This is due to the lake effect of the dam slowing down the current and making it more noticeable.
You can see the green hue of water flowing over the spillway.
Fingers crossed we get some much needed rainfall to try and flush this downstream.
Tonight is the last city market downtown. So if you’ve procrastinated like me, it’s our last chance.
The ski Bronx have a show tonight, and then one next Wednesday and Friday to close out their season at Shorewood park.
I had a nice talk with karen from hoo haven, with a pickle the pelican update.
Pickle is not as grumpy and is eating like a pig.
Karen said the red snapper is his favorite food of choice.
With him eating on his own, she is able to put his meds in the fish. So he doesn ‘t even know.
He has started getting along with Charlie. Their resident pelican.
The infection on his wing seems to be healing nicely.
When the two pelicans are out running around, charlie flaps his wings when he’s running, but he cannot fly. That’s why he is there.
Pickles wing is probably still a little sore, so he doesn ‘t flap his wings around much when he runs around, I was told.
The two pelicans can swim in the indoor protected pond at hoo haven.
They also enjoy their quiet time in the evening together.
Their resident Turkey vulture that is 32 years old doesn’t seem to have a problem with pickle.
The vet will be back out again next week to recheck Pickle’s wing and make sure he’s still moving in a forward direction.
Karen informed me they are in desperate need of a lot of old towels. If you have any around that you would be interested in donating to their facility.
Hopefully many of you enjoy this feel good story of pickle the pelican.
And if that is the case, please make a donation to hoo haven so they can continue to do great things for the wildlife In our area.
Don’t let the Green River scare you. It’s still beautiful for boating.
As always, practice defensive driving and let’s all make it back to the dock safe and sound
